The Rich World of Domino Game Variants

Domino games have been a staple of social entertainment across Southeast Asia for generations. While Domino QQ (Qiu Qiu) is the most well-known betting variant, a number of distinct game styles have evolved across different regions. Each has its own rules, strategies, and culture. This guide covers the major variants you should know.

Domino QQ (Qiu Qiu / Domino 99)

The flagship variant — and the focus of this site. Domino QQ is a 4-tile betting game where players pair their tiles and calculate values using the last digit of pip totals. It blends poker-style wagering with domino tile mechanics and is widely played across Indonesia, Malaysia, and the broader Southeast Asian region.

  • Tiles per player: 4 (dealt 3 + 1)
  • Core mechanic: Pair values calculated as last digit of pip total
  • Special hands: Four Doubles, Pure Big, Pure Small
  • Betting structure: Two rounds (pre and post fourth tile)

Gaple

Gaple is one of the most popular traditional domino games in Indonesia and is quite different from Domino QQ. Rather than a betting game based on hand values, Gaple is a chain-building game similar in spirit to Western dominoes.

  • Objective: Be the first player to play all your tiles by matching pip values end-to-end in a chain.
  • Players: 2 to 4
  • Tiles per player: 7 tiles each at the start
  • Key rule: You must play a tile that matches an open end of the chain. If you can't, you pass.
  • Scoring: Players who still hold tiles when someone empties their hand lose points equal to their remaining tile pips.

Gaple requires tile memory and strategic sequencing — knowing which tiles to hold and which to play early is crucial.

Ceme (Domino Ceme)

Ceme is a two-tile domino betting game often compared to Baccarat. It's faster and simpler than Domino QQ, making it popular for quick rounds.

  • Tiles per player: 2
  • Core mechanic: Same last-digit pip calculation, but with just one pair
  • Special roles: One player acts as the "banker" (city/dealer), others play against the banker
  • Winning: Players with a higher value than the banker win; ties go to the banker
  • Special hand — Six Gods (Dewa Enam): A hand of 6–6 beats everything, including the banker

Domino 99 (Ninety-Nine)

Domino 99 is essentially the same game as Domino QQ — the "99" name refers to the highest possible two-pair value of 9 and 9. In many regions, Domino QQ and Domino 99 are used interchangeably, though minor local rule variations can exist:

  • Some versions have stricter special-hand hierarchies.
  • Betting limits and ante structures may differ by table or region.
  • Some Domino 99 tables include a "small ball" side bet option.

Pai Gow (Historical Influence)

While not commonly played in Indonesia, Pai Gow is the Chinese domino game that directly influenced Domino QQ. In Pai Gow, players receive four tiles and divide them into a "high hand" and "low hand" pair — a structure very similar to modern Domino QQ. Understanding Pai Gow's origins helps explain the design logic behind QQ's hand-splitting mechanics.
